“B.S.” for Hair Problems=Biotin Supplementation ?

-Biotin is also known as vitamin B7 or H. It plays an essential role in the keratinization process of hair and nails.
-It is commonly prescribed in hair disorders. Indeed, There are full of touted benefits of Biotin hair quality and quantity…most of it from Social Media

The following 2 articles have less enthusiastic conclusions:

1-There is poor evidence to show that it works unless there is an underlying pathology for poor hair or nail growth. It could be beneficial in acquired and inherited causes of biotin deficiency as well as brittle nail syndrome an uncombable hair

2-“To date, there have been no clinical trials conducted to investigate the efficacy of biotin supplementation for the treatment of alopecia of any kin, nor has there been any randomized controlled trial to study its effect on hair quality and quantity in human subjects.”

The last article says a nice story on how biotin deficiency can lead to loss of hairs in mice.

3-Biotin can work in some cases. Read the following story. Antibiotics (such as Vancomycin) have been shown to lead to loss of hairs in mice. It results in gut imbalances where a bacteria (Lactobacillus Murinus). This depletes biotin in the gut and thus in the organism leading to loss of hairs. Supplementation of Biotin can reverse established alopecia symptoms.
